According to Merriam Webster the definition of Extrapolate is:
a : to project, extend, or expand (known data or experience) into an area not known or experienced so as to arrive at a usually conjectural knowledge of the unknown area
Lately my seven year old Dude has been catching me off guard with the parallels he is making. Yesterday we were driving home from the doctors office. Dude was watching Peter pan in the backseat.
He asked, “Mom, are fairies real or pretend?”
Me, “Fairies are pretend.”
Dude, “Is the Tooth Fairy real?
In my head…..BUSTED!
Me, “Well actually I’m the tooth fairy.”
Dude, “You are?” That is so cool Mom!”‘
Me, “I’m just your tooth fairy. Not anyone else’s.”
(How many of you would make a parallel between Tinkerbell and the Tooth Fairy? Not I.)
Two minutes later….
Dude, “Mom, is Santa real?”
In my head….FIVE ALARM FIRE! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
Me,”Santa is totally real.”
Now I do feel guilty for lying to him especially since this is the first time he’s ever questioned me directly about it. Mainly I lied because his five year old sister was sitting in the back seat too. Also both of them had just received flu shots. What was I going to say? By the way you get a shot and you get to loose the magic of childhood. All in one day. (It’s a twofer!)
